Can I get a massage while Pregnant?

Absolutely! A Pregnancy Massage is a wonderful way to celebrate your pregnancy, practice self-love during a life changing time, and create a bonding experience with your baby.


As a Mama to 5 little ones, trust me when I say that I understand what your body is going through right now. It would be hard to catalog the myriad of changes that are taking place, not only physically but emotionally as well. 


I recommend that you consult a Pregnancy Massage Specialist during your first trimester. Around 10-12 weeks is the perfect time to begin Pregnancy Massage Therapy. If you are having any issues with your pregnancy, you will want to discuss this with your therapist DURING scheduling. It may be necessary to bring a release form from your doctor. Your massage therapist should offer to provide this form. 


One of the most important things to consider when scheduling Pregnancy Massage is the safety of not only you but your baby as well. Is the therapist well-trained? Your therapist should have advanced training AND experience in Pregnancy Massage. Additionally, he/she should be well versed in the common complaints that arise during Pregnancy. 


One other issue that I must address is bolstering. Obviously, you will not be lying in a prone (face down ) position during your session. You may see special pillows or tables with "cut-outs" that would place you face-down for a session. I do NOT recommend this. In my 15 years of experience offering specialty Pregnancy Massage, I do not believe that there is enough evidence to 100% support the safe use of these devices. In my studio, I utilize a bolstering system that will keep you comfortable AND safe at all times. 


Finally, you can receive massage as frequently as you like during pregnancy. As a general rule of thumb, I recommend clients begin with once every 3-4 weeks in the first trimester and slowly increase the frequency as the pregnancy progresses. I have many pregnant clients who will receive massage once a week in the 3rd trimester. This is not only healthy but safe as well.

Should I get my abdomen massaged?

I must admit that I may be a bit biased when asked this question. When I first started massage school 15 years ago, we covered abdominal massage but there wasn't much emphasis placed on massaging the abdomen. Once I graduated, I didn't even suggest that clients receive abdominal massage. Put simply, I just didn't "get it."


Fast forward a couple of years after I was licensed, I met an AMAZING massage therapist and she suggested an abdominal massage. I started to say, no thanks, but she stopped me and explained some amazing benefits:


~Improved Immune Function (70-80 % of your immune system is localized in your gut)

~Relaxation

~Decrease in Constipation

~Toning of the abdominal muscle

~Decrease in LOW Back Pain (yep, you read that correctly-there are muscles that contribute to low back pain that are actually accessed more readily through the abdomen than the back)


She went on to further explain that the abdomen is an emotional "center" where emotions and past experiences are held. She explained that abdominal massage is not only physically beneficial, but emotionally as well. 


Needless to say, I agreed to the abdominal massage. It was a game-changer for me. For starters, she was experienced in abdominal massage. It felt amazing and to this day, abdominal massage remains one of my absolute favorite areas to have massaged. 


Although I see many clients who shy away from abdominal massage, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Personally, I like to add a hand-crafted aromatherapy blend to the experience and create an amazing experience. 


Definitely consider saying, yes to abdominal massage during your next session. You won't regret it!

Deep Pressure vs Deep Tissue Massage

What is the difference between Deep Tissue Massage and Deep Pressure Massage? Although many people use the terms interchangeably (including some massage therapists!), Deep Tissue Massage is NOT the same thing as Deep Pressure Massage.


Depending on modality (type of massage), most massage sessions can include Deep Pressure. A perfect example of applying deep pressure would be during a Swedish Massage. With the traditional long, gliding strokes of Swedish Massage, the therapist can simply apply more pressure (force) to deliver a deep pressure session. A deep pressure massage is frequently offered to the entire body, is experienced as deeply relaxing, and typically is not uncomfortable in any way.


Deep Tissue Massage, on the other hand, is a separate modality of it's own. A therapist who is offering Deep Tissue Massage will be offering a set of strokes that are designed to address and access the deeper muscle layers. A therapist offering true Deep Tissue Massage has received advanced training in this technique. 


Deep Tissue Massage is frequently offered in an area of concern vs. being offered to the entire body in one session. Although it is not the goal of ANY massage to be painful, Deep Tissue Massage may uncover some tender areas. It is important to offer feedback to your therapist during your session. Deep Tissue Massage is goal oriented and your therapist will discuss your goals and make recommendations on how frequently you will want to receive a session to obtain the maximum benefits. 


Although both can be enjoyable, it is important to verify your therapist's training to be assured that your goals for your massage session are met.  It is also important to ensure your safe enjoyment of services to clarify the level of training that your therapist has had and determine if he or she is offering Deep Pressure Massage or Deep Tissue Massage.

What is Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy?

Ashiatsu literally means "Ashi" (foot) Atsu (pressure)


An Ashiatsu therapist will massage the body with their feet while keeping their balance with a well-placed set of bars secured to the ceiling over the table.


Ashiatsu has been termed, "the deepest, most luxurious massage in the world," for it's ability to go deeper than is possible with your typical deep tissue massage. Despite the depth of pressure, the massage remains smooth and fluid, creating an unbelievably luxurious feeling to the recipient.

Should my massage hurt?

In a word, no. In two words, absolutely not!


"No pain, no gain" is not applicable to a massage session. 


Unfortunately, some guests have had experiences with Deep massage in the past that was quite painful. Worse yet, they may have even been told that this pain was beneficial and were promised great relief if they only endured through the session.


In 15 years of practice, I believe that the human body, like so many other things in life, responds well to patience, kindness, love, attention, and true listening. 


In my opinion, it is never appropriate to force the body to do anything. When the body is "attacked" with aggressive techniques, the first response will always be immediate resistance in the form of tensing the muscles and bracing yourself for the onslaught of pain. 


In our fast-paced society, it is common to have guests request or demand, immediate results. Unfortunately, your body has developed habits over YEARS of living. Oftentimes, it will not be fixed in one session. 


I encourage each guest to stop. Breathe. Listen to your body. What is it trying to tell you? Is it hurting? Is it aching? Moving slowly? Creaking? How can you love and honor your body today? Good nutrition, adequate rest, daily movement, and quality bodywork are a great place to start. Honor yourself. You are totally worth it!

This includes the blood vessels, muscles, and nerves of the head and neck. They may also result from changes in chemical activity in the brain."


Okay, so what is really going on? Let's take a look at some of the most common culprits when it comes to TENSION HEADACHES and talk about what you can do to relieve the pain associated with headaches.


No one likes a pain in the neck, literally! Much less a headache. Tension headaches are a common reason to seek out a massage therapist. The nagging, chronic ache has just become too much and you know that you need to take action.

Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to stress I go. 


Life has become pretty damn stressful. How did that happen? First, let's take a look at the different types of stress and how it may be effecting your health. 


A certain amount of stress is normal and can even be positive. It motivates us to be successful, to complete projects, and to grow, both personally and professionally. 


But what happens when you experience a high level of stress WITHOUT the accompanying down time that follows a stressful event. Well, this is when stress becomes chronic. 


Chronic stress has been linked to back pain, headaches, anxiety, depression, and digestive disorders. Worse yet, stress can contribute to the severity of the following: heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.


Why are we so stressed and what can we do about it?


Today, we are bombarded with stimulation in all directions. Working, taking care of kids (or parents), shuffling around from one activity to another, and constantly surrounded by a busy digital world. 


It is important to take the time (I know it's hard) for YOU. Take a moment and set aside 20 minutes a day to do nothing. It isn't lazy or unproductive. In fact, it may be the best thing you do to increase your productivity. If 20 minutes sounds like a leap, then start with 5 minutes and gradually build up to 20 minutes.


At the end of the day, what are your priorities? What really matters? Sure, things need to be done and life has become a busy place. You matter.

Whether you are expecting your first baby or you're a seasoned pro at this pregnancy thing, one thing is for certain, no two pregnancies are alike and no two pregnant women are alike.


That said, there does seem to be some common complaints that most pregnant women do experience: round ligament pain, low back pain, moods swings, fluid retention, achy joints. You may have one, none, or all of the above. It's all completely normal.


Pregnancy massage is an amazing way to nurture yourself and your unborn child during this miraculous time of your life. Maybe you have been planning this for awhile or perhaps it was the best surprise of your life. Either way, it's a unique and powerful journey. 


When considering a Pregnancy Massage, be sure to look for a Pregnancy Massage Specialist. A Pregnancy Massage Specialist has advanced training in Pregnancy Massage, and can also offer pregnancy knowledge. Beware of massage therapists who offer Pregnancy Massage yet have little to no training beyond what was offered in a basic massage school program.

As a Pregnancy Massage Specialist with 15 and a half years of experience AND a mother to 5 children, I have found that the safest way to receive Pregnancy Massage is face-up with props and side-lying. I know that there are specialized pillows and tables on the market today with special cut-outs (where your belly would go with you lying face-down.) In my personal and professional opinion, I do not believe that there is adequate research or evidence to fully support the safety of such tables 100% and thus, I cannot recommend or utilize them in my massage studio.

Congratulations, you are expecting a baby!


Once the excitement settles in and you are ready to schedule your first Pregnancy Massage, you will naturally want to know how often should you receive a Pregnancy Massage? How often CAN you safely receive a massage? 


I recommend that all newly expectant Moms-To-Be schedule their first Pregnancy Massage towards the end of the first trimester (8-10 weeks is ideal.)


During that session, your Pregnancy Massage Specialist can make recommendations for you to guide you throughout your 9 month journey. As a general guideline, I recommend the following:


First Trimester: Pregnancy Massage once per month

Second Trimester: Pregnancy Massage every 2-4 weeks

Third Trimester: Pregnancy Massage every 1-2 weeks


Clearly, this is not set in stone, it is merely a guideline to give you an idea of what is optimal. Studies have shown that regular Pregnancy Massage leads to a healthier, less stressful Pregnancy and can also promote a healthier labor.

About 7 years ago, I first heard of Fertility Massage. As a Pregnancy Massage Therapist and a mother of (then 3 children), I was intrigued by the idea of a "Fertility Massage." 


Almost immediately following that thought was a whole lot of skepticism. I mean, really, what a scam, what are they trying to sell these women?


Another couple of years past and I heard about Fertility Massage again. Rather than dismissing it, I decided to investigate further. What WAS a Fertility Massage?


As I looked into Fertility Massage, I discovered some amazing things. First of all, a Fertility Massage Therapist does not make any claims about "getting clients pregnant." Fertility Massage Therapists help you have the healthiest body possible so that conception can occur. 


During an initial Fertility Massage, your therapist will spend 30-minutes to an hour discussing your Fertility Journey and your general health. Nutrition, lifestyle, charting, and holistic options may be on the menu to discuss.  


Although the massage is an important component of the first visit, it is by no means all inclusive. 


In my private practice, I have had Fertility clients tell me that it was worth the experience-even if they did NOT get pregnant. Those are pretty powerful words from someone who has been trying to conceive for years. 


Other guests walked away with a handful of resources to explore what their holistic options were-things their doctor had never mentioned.  


Still others left with a newfound understanding of how their body works. The Fertility Massage experience, for them, was an opportunity to break the silence surrounding their divine womanhood and unlock the secrets of what is really going on.

"Does Massage Cupping hurt?"

During the Summer 2016 Olympics, Massage Cupping was center stage as an oddity and a curiosity. What were those strange, round marks on the athletes and why would anyone do that to themselves? Was the cost of winning really worth the pain?


As these questions arose, I had to chuckle a bit. Massage Cupping is an ancient technique, taken from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medecine.)


Not only does Massage Cupping NOT hurt, but many guests find that it provides faster pain relief than a traditional massage such as Deep Tissue Massage and Trigger Point Therapy.


In addition, Massage Cupping is not guaranteed to leave the telltale marks. It is possible to have a cupping session and be mark-free. Even if marks do occur, they will fade within a day or so. 


In summary, as with any massage session, "no pain, no gain" is not the theme of the day. Massage Cupping is a safe, effective treatment for alleviating muscular pain.

Back pain can be caused by a variety of things. Almost always, back pain is going to fall under the umbrella of "Stress." 


When you think of stress, frequently you are thinking of mental or emotional stress. While those may also be causing pain, physical stress is often the culprit.

"What happens during an Ashiatsu Session?"

Ashiatsu, which literally translates to mean "Foot Pressure," is a type of barefoot massage technique.


During the session, you will be asked to begin your session face down while relaxing on a comfortable, heated massage table. 


Your Ashiatsu therapist will use a set of bars, attached to the ceiling, to support and balance themselves, while delivering the massage with their feet.

Despite the research and glowing testimonials, only 5-10% of people who start a diet will actually have success (lose weight long-term) on that diet. How can that be?


There are endless "diets" to choose from and they all offer the "perfect" plan for your success. So, how is it possible that so many aren't finding that success?


The weight loss industry is big money. It brings in billions each year-BILLIONS. Surely, somewhere in all of those billions of dollars, there must be the RIGHT answer to this diet thing.


Eating is an emotional experience. It is a psychological experience. In fact, most of our food encounters begin in our mind-not our stomachs.


"What sounds good to you?" is a question we post to others and ourselves on a daily basis. When we plan our next meal, we think about the foods we enjoy, how they smell, how they taste, and yes, how they make us feel.


The anticipation of savoring a well-loved food is huge. As we create our foodie-fantasy in our minds, we start to feel good, happier, excited.


Planning a special meal or making dinner plans at a favorite restaurant fills us with excitement. It is all positive.


What isn't so positive is the feeling we get after we overindulge.


"I ate too much."


"I ate the wrong thing-again."


Worse than this are the feelings that come- guilt, shame, anger.


What a terrible way to live!


Here's the thing- diets are designed for you to fail. Not intentionally, necessarily, but they are not created to address the WHY of eating. They are designed to focus on rules and regulations. They provide lists of what you can and cannot have. They tell you when to eat, how to eat, and what to eat. The result? You start to feel like you are in a prison.


Ultimately, you decide that this diet is simply not going to work for YOU and you throw in the towel, hanging your head in shame.


But let me ask you this- did you fail or did the diet fail YOU?


If your car wasn't running properly and you took it to a mechanic to fix it, and when you picked the car up, it still wasn't running properly, who would be responsible-you? or the mechanic?


Often, the solution is to blame and NOT YOU.


No, you didn't pick the wrong diet. No, you aren't worthless. No, you aren't to BLAME.


Nothing good grows from despair, sadness, shame, and guilt.


Until you begin to unravel the reasons why you eat and take a look at what is the motivating factor behind your relationship with food, I guarantee, no diet is going to be the "right" diet.

Wild Soul is a 12 Week Group Coaching Program.

Are You a Professional Dieter?

The latest diet is on the market and guess who's the first in line?  YOU!


You've tried every single diet in the past and you know the ins and outs of dieting. You can recite the appropriate number of calories that are recommended for any given day and you know exactly how much water is recommended for your body weight. 


You have been on the dieting wheel for so long that you wouldn't know what it would look like if you got off it. 


As each new diet comes along, you are once again filled with HOPE. This time is going to be different. After all, you KNOW how to follow all the rules. It is just a matter of mastering the rules of this new diet and you will be on your way to your perfect size. 


Your scale is polished, your grocery list made, rules have been memorized, notes made...you are ready!


And yet.... a few weeks in, or maybe a month or two, it happens. ANOTHER failed diet. To console yourself, you go ahead and eat all of your favorite foods and WOW, they taste amazing. The guilt is there but hey, you're still hopeful. This wasn't THE diet, it was just A diet. Your diet is coming and when it does, you will be ready! In the meantime, you won't "diet" necessarily, you'll just fall back on old faithful-calorie counting, weigh ins, and, of course, plenty of guilt and shame.

Want to Lose Weight? Stop Dieting....

According to a study conducted by UCLA, not only do diets NOT work to help you lose weight, they are actually a strong predictor that you will GAIN weight.


Up to 95% of all diets FAIL. Participants may initially see a weight loss decrease of 5-10% but that quickly slows and the weight begins to creep back up- and then some.


Dr. Mark Hyman states that the average dieter will not only NOT lose weight but they will actually see a weight INCREASE of 11 lbs.

How is this possible?


The reason that you are not losing weight dieting (and may in fact be gaining weight) is that it isn't about the diet at all. You don't have a weight problem. You have a mind problem.


Let's take a look at how most diets work...


First of all, diets begin by telling you, the hopeful dieter, how their diet is going to succeed where no other diet ever has. They convince you that this time is different, their diet is different, and it will help you lose weight quickly and painlessly. Great, you are ready!


Unfortunately, you quickly encounter several problems...

1- Rules and Regulations. Diets are very clear on what you can and you cannot do. Eat this food, not that. Only eat at this time of day. Make sure all meals are spaced an adequate distance apart. Avoid this group of foods entirely. And on it goes. Despite your best efforts to "obey the rules," you quickly start to feel the restrictions and it begins to feel like punishment. Every time you take a bite of the forbidden, you feel badly. You may even start to tell yourself that you have "been bad," for indulging in a forbidden treat. Long-term, this becomes unsustainable and you simply give up.


2-Chronic Dieting Disrupts Metabolism. Not only did that last diet NOT work, but now your metabolism is sluggish and not functioning efficiently. The result? You can now eat even LESS food than previously in order to maintain your current weight, forget about losing any weight because now it's going to be a struggle to simply not GAIN weight.


3-Disregard for Body Cues. Now, you are hungrier than ever but struggling to hang on to your current weight because of a sluggish metabolism. So you are eating LESS which leads you to under-eating. Your body slips into starvation mode and begins to hold onto every single pound. Your body tells you that it is HUNGRY. But, after years of dieting, you simply don't listen. To be honest, you have probably lost the ability to listen to your body's cues regarding hunger, satiation, and pleasure with food. For years, food has been the enemy. You have lost touch with how to genuinely listen to your body.


There is a science to hunger, eating, and why and how we eat and approach food.


Dieting tells us that if we simply control our food, we can control our weight.

The truth is that your weight isn't even the problem. The problem is a disconnection between what your body needs and what you are giving it. If you are a chronic dieter, you probably stopped listening to what your body wanted long ago. I have had clients who are eating MORE than they want to eat, simply because their diet says to. They are literally choking down "X" many meals and snacks a day, whether they are hungry or not. And, of course, plenty of women who are eating a lot less of what they want, simply because "those are the rules."


You are in "diet" mode and have been convinced that if your willpower is strong enough, you can lick this weight loss thing. It isn't about willpower and it definitely isn't about the diet.


What is the answer? STOP DIETING. Study after study has proven that dieting does NOT work.


In order for you to achieve long-term weight loss, it's time to take a look at why you eat, not what you eat. Throw the diet out the window and take a new approach to weight loss. Start focusing on YOU and creating a place where your lovely body can begin to heal. Start listening to what your body is telling you: truly listening...what does YOUR body need? what does it want?

You KNOW how to eat and what to do, so what's the problem?

If you are overweight and would like to lose weight, either for health reasons or to simply look and feel better, what's the best way to do so?


Start a diet, of course!  In the United States, the paradigm for weight loss is a DIET.


What's a paradigm?


Simply stated, a paradigm is a standard, perspective, belief, or set of ideas. It is an accepted idea that if you want to lose weight, you should begin a diet and/or a weight loss program. 


What else works to lose weight? For most of you, this thought has never crossed your mind. I mean, diets work, right? 


Let me ask you this- if you have been dieting for a significant amount of time (think years,) then I guarantee that you know the rules. You know the terms. You know HOW to lose weight. And yet, diets are not working for you. 


The reason is very simple, really. Diets do not work because they fail to address the WHY.


Why are you eating that second helping?


Why do you want to reach for a cookie in times of stress?


Why do you eat until you are uncomfortable?


Why do you continue your eating patterns when they bring you neither health nor your goals for appearance?


You are living in your comfort zone.  It feels good there. It is comfortable and safe and as long as you stay there, you maintain the status quo. Sure, maybe you aren't as satisfied with life as you could be but you aren't in a state of panic either. 


The image below is a great infographic on your safe space, "your comfort zone," and what you want. In between those two things is your story. All of your beliefs and expectations, your back story, your fears.... it all exists in this space. 


When you start thinking about losing weight, you open the door to that space.

 

Whether you are actively dieting or simply listening to that little voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough. You don't deserve it. You aren't worthy. You can't. You shouldn't. You will NEVER be successful. You've done everything, why bother. Having another piece of cake? Loser! Fatty! FAILURE. 


My goodness, aren't you tired of it? When is it time to say, enough is enough? Wouldn't you like to silence that voice for good?


The problem with dieting is that you try to fly over to the other side. You pick your diet and hop on board. You are READY to get what you want -and quick! 

But, you see, that never works. It never could because the basic beliefs that you hold dear-the ones that are telling you what you can and cannot do- you don't really believe it. 


You can't fly over this canyon. You have to build a bridge. One stone, one plank, one board at a time. You have to walk through the fire so that you can come out on the other side powerful and strong. 


Every single step that you take brings you closer to YOUR TRUTH. Every single step you take, you are re-writing YOUR story.


And when you get there, that is when true magic happens. That is when you are able to OWN YOUR STORY.

What's YOUR Eating Personality?


Wild Soul is NOT a diet. It is a new way of approaching your relationship with food and yourself. 


One of the things that can be beneficial is to learn what your diet personality is. 


First of all, let me say that most people have a predominant diet personality with some or all of the other personalities overlapping. Usually one is noticeably more dominant than the others and when hearing it described, you get that "aha!" moment when you know that it sounds just like you.


#1: The Mindless Eater

I am going to begin with The Mindless Eater not only because it is MY own dominant eating personality (to my surprise!) but also because I think that almost every chronic dieter can identify with this personality. 


As a Mindless Eater, you love to multi-task. You are a busy lady with plenty to do. When you are working at your desk or otherwise engaged, you typically use this time to eat. When having meals, you tend to play with your phone or other digital media, read a book, or look through work. 


If you have small children, you may find yourself nibbling off their unfinished plates. When passing through the kitchen, you've been known to grab a little "nibble" of something that is handy and convenient. If you work around others and there are occasional treats, you enjoy sampling them, usually in passing or while doing something else.   


To finish a long day, you love to reward yourself by having a snack in front of the tv where you've snuggled up to watch your favorite show. 


You would most likely say that you don't eat much at all which is probably true-at any given moment. The problem is that you are unaware of exactly how much you are eating because you are eating a little bit ALL THE TIME. 


You rarely experience hunger cues because you typically do not go too long between meals, snacks, and "nibbles."


#2:The Chaotic Eater

The Chaotic Eater loves to piggyback on other eating personalities. This person, either through family or work commitments, is BUSY. You tend to live in a consistent state of stress, rarely listen to body cues and tend to eat on the go frequently. 


Your "grab 'n go" mentality often leads to poor food choices, overeating, and stress eating. 


The Chaotic Eater rarely takes the time to listen to her body cues and you often find yourself ravenous after ignoring repeated body requests to be fed. 


Due to high states of stress, you rarely have time to relax, much less sit down to a meal. Planning ahead is just not your thing (who has the time??)


You can easily make yourself a martyr, frequently sacrificing your needs for the needs of others. You have a hard time saying no and are prone to burn out. 


#3: The Serial Dieter

The Serial Dieter has been at this game of dieting for a LONG time. You know what the rules are. In fact, you are well versed in all of the most common diet rules and regulations. 


You know how to calorie count, can list  all of the facts about fat grams, carbs, and sugar. You flow smoothly from one diet to another, hoping to find the perfect match for you. 


Even when you are not actively "on" a diet, the rules (from diets past) remain in your head and you are consistently reminded which foods are good and which foods are bad. What you don't realize, is that whether you are currently on a diet or not, you are still dieting. In fact, this is a way of life for you. You jumped on the diet wheel years ago and you have yet to get off. 


Despite growing evidence that dieting does NOT work, you believe it is all a matter of finding your match. 


With dieting a way of life, you cycle between a feeling of hope (starting a new diet) and feelings of failure (another diet bites the dust!)


At some point in your life, usually early on (teens or even sooner) you became convinced that your weight needed to be altered-that YOU needed to be altered in order to be worthy and deserving. 


For you, weight loss is like chasing the holy grail-you don't truly believe you will ever find it nor do you think you deserve to but it's what you have always done. It's comfortable. It's familiar. It's all you know. 


# 4: The Healthy Dieter

I like to call the Healthy Dieter, the "Dieter in Disguise." You approach weight loss from the perspective of healthy food and good nutrition. You know what is "good" and what is "bad." You may call yourself a clean eater and you typically stick to wholesome foods. You believe fitness is an important part of a healthy life. 


From the outside looking in, you seem to have licked this weight game. You are either not overweight or you are pretty close to what you consider a "goal" weight. 


What's the problem? In your mind, you are far from relaxed with your relationship with food. In fact, you are hyper-vigilant. You are not about to make a mistake, especially when it comes to food-until you do. 


Usually, breaking one of the "rules" sets the voice off inside your head that tells you that you are on your way to total failure. You lost control again (something you value more than all else) and you immediately feel shame, guilt, and may even experience depression over your lack of willpower. 


You don't believe that you truly "diet" because you are not following a program, you are simply eating "right."


When you slip and eat something unhealthy, it can easily lead you quickly into overeating and binge eating. This creates a cycle of unpleasant feelings about yourself, your weight and your body. Despite your healthy habits, it is never good enough. 


All of the above eating personalities develop over time and can contribute to weight gain PLUS an inability to lose weight. Chronic dieting or food restriction leads to a sluggish metabolism, unhealthy view of food as "good or bad," and a deprivation mentality brought on by allowing your body to consistently slip into starvation mode.

How Much Will You "Pay" For Your Thanksgiving Dinner?


As Thanksgiving has been approaching, my Facebook news feed has been filled with a combination of delicious recipes and also a variety of suggestions on how I can enjoy Thanksgiving without guilt. 


My initial thought was awesome! We spend way too much time indulging guilt over eating and feeling badly about this food or that.  For my anti-dieting mind, this sounded right up my alley!


Much to my disappointment (and honestly anger), I discovered that these articles wanted to suggest ways that I can "pay" for my Thanksgiving. These are just a few of what I have seen....


"....Burpee and core pre Thanksgiving challenge. Lets burn all the calories prior!!!..."


"....Thanksgiving and Christmas is around the corner 

Who’s interested in taking a $25/mo weight loss challenge? Block carbs and fats ...."


"....I'm gonna ask that all my friends an family take the fat ass challenge with me, an post ur pre Thanksgiving weight here....."


"....3 Simple Ways to Enjoy Thanksgiving Without Gaining Weight...."


"....Happy early Thanksgiving. Thank me later! Do this workout with me and I promise you won't feel guilty about indulging on Thursday....."


That is a SAMPLE of what I came across.


Wow, ladies, I am going to be honest with you- that pisses me off. And it should piss you off too, you know why? Because you are worth more than this. You matter more than this. 


You deserve to eat whatever you want on Thanksgiving. Not because you did burpees before Thanksgiving. Not because you won't eat for days after. Not because you have "paid" for what you are going to eat before or after you eat it. 


These are "dieting" concepts. These are false beliefs. Quite honestly, this is part of the "fat-shaming" culture that we live in that encourages us-yes, us-WOMEN in particular, to feel guilty for every bite that passes our lips. 


Dieting and guilt and shame have no place in your life anymore. 


Imagine if you could approach Thanksgiving in a different way. A beautiful day to be with your family, to enjoy some delicious food, to listen to your body and respond to what you truly want to eat-and what you don't. 


Women don't overeat on Thanksgiving (or other holidays or occasions) because they have no willpower, are weak or can't control themselves. 


WHY, then?


When you are stuck in a dieting mentality, every meal is your last. Every occasion is your last opportunity to "indulge." Everything on the table is forbidden fruit so when you allow yourself a "taste," your inner fear factor kicks in and tells you that you better stock up, baby, because you are never having this again. 


But, what if....it wasn't forbidden?


What if you were allowed to eat what you wanted, whenever you felt like it? 

Well, that's a horse of a different color, now isn't it? Overeating and binge eating drastically decrease. Your body relaxes. 


My advice this Thanksgiving? Enjoy every bite. Not because it's your last but because food is meant to be pleasurable. It is meant to feel good. It is okay to enjoy it. I think that you will find that when you approach it in this manner, you eat far less and feel far better.
